Portus Modelling Workshop

As part of the Portus project we held a workshop today to discuss progress on the 3d recording and modelling of some of the Portus buildings. We concentrated on the Navalia and the Grandi Magazzini di Settimio Severo today. Simon Keay started by talking about the current state of archaeological knowledge concerning these buildings, the history of research and the interpretations growing from our project. DHDL update

The Digital Humanities Distributed Lab (DHDL) student design team have now had a few meetings and a few proposals for technology are on the table. Proposed technological components include: Pre-configured and usually-on webcam systems in DH rooms, for broadcasting lectures and multi-disciplinary seminars and for promoting serendipitous encounters at other times; Wall-mounted LCD touch screens will provide DH activity updates and message-boards. SMuRF: Multidisciplinary Research Conference for Early Career Researchers (ECRs)

The SMuRF event was fabulous. A room full of 80 or so ECRs devoted to multidisciplinary research. There was a range of facilitated sessions, including a discussion of peer review practice that I chaired. Other issues raised were methods for supporting multidisciplinary communities, issues of career progression and recognition for multidisciplinary activity and an outline of the University's general research strategy, and in particular multidisciplinary research.
